Teeth are made of hard, durable substances. Unfortunately, when they are not used properly, they can become damaged. Here are some bad habits that can do damage to your teeth, gums, and jaw.

Keeping your jaw in a protruding position, such as when you bite your nails, can put an inordinate amount of pressure on your jaw joint. Biting nails also puts you at risk of chipping or cracking teeth. Try applying bitter-tasting nail polish, or reducing your overall stress level. If particular situations are triggers for you, find something to do with your hands during those times.

Teeth are made for biting and chewing food–not opening things, or holding things when your hands are full. Using teeth as tools drastically increases your risk of breaking teeth, as well as putting pressure on your jaw. It also puts you at risk of swallowing things that you shouldn’t. Take a minute and find the tools required or ask someone to give you a hand–your teeth will thank you.

Brushing your teeth twice a day is one of the best habits you could develop for your teeth. However, you must use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle pressure when brushing teeth. Using a stiff- bristled toothbrush and brushing too hard can both damage your tooth enamel and your gum tissues. This opens them up to infection and tooth erosion. When brushing your teeth, think “massage,” rather than “scrub.”

At Magnificent Mile Family Dental, the practice of Dr. Olaitan Okediji in Chicago, Illinois, we are pleased to offer mercury-free fillings for our patients’ healthy smiles. Amalgam fillings, or mercury fillings, consist of a combination of silver, tin, copper, zinc and mercury. Because amalgam fillings have mercury in them, they release small amounts of mercury into your body which may be harmful to your health.

Magnificent Mile Family Dental provides dental composite fillings, also known as white fillings, which are a tooth-colored filling that blends in with your natural smile. Composite fillings are a popular choice for your smile because they look natural. They are best-suited for small to mid-size cavities and can be used on both the front and back teeth, where they withstand the pressures of chewing.

Unlike amalgam fillings, with a composite filling, your dentist doesn’t need to cut away healthy tooth structure because the composite resin bonds to the tooth. Composite fillings shrink a tiny bit when they harden which might allow bacteria to enter, making them technique sensitive, so they take a little longer to fill, and our skilled dentist will make sure the filling is layered properly. Composite fillings last anywhere from 7-10 years when properly cared for and maintained.

If you need a cavity filled or have any questions about our mercury-free fillings, Dr. Olaitan Okediji at Magnificent Mile Family Dental in Chicago, Illinois, is here to help. You can reach our dedicated team by calling 312-280-0034 today!
